| Holodomor Memorial | In close proximity to Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, in 2008 a memorial was erected to serve as national site to the memory of the victims of Holodomor.![]() The Holodomor Memorial is located at the edge of the hillside descending to Dnipro River. A paved axis from Ivan Mazepa Street, lined with sculptures, leads directly to it and is continued with stairs into the hillside. The monuments’s design resulted from a design competiton in which the team headed by artist Anatoliy Haidamaka and architect Yuriy Kovalev succeded. The main element of the memorial, a 35 meters high sculptural tower made of concrete and featuring artistic glass inserts, symbolizes a candle. Underneath the tower, the so-called “Hall of Memory” will provide visitors with information about Holodomor. Facing towards the river, a symbolic wall is located, representing black wooden planks with carved names of the villages suffered from Holodomor and quotes from the survivor’s recollections about the tragedy. The memorial was inaugurated on November 22, 2008 in the presence of President Victor Yushchenko. |
